Portugal, in turn, presents a share of expenditure dedicated to illness and disability ranking higher than the EU mean but showing lower levels than the average in the remaining social protection areas. In comparison with Spain, unemployment protection is lower in Portugal but family protection is significantly higher. When the volume of

resources dedicated to each social policy area is analysed in terms of their proportion of GDP, Figure 7 reinforces the conclusions attained above.
