ABSTRACT

This essay examines the history of the involvement of the Taiwanese people in modern sport. It starts by looking at the origin of Taiwanese sport during the Japanese occupation (1895-1945). It then focuses on the period since 1945, a time of rapid transition within the country, and breaks the post-war years down into three phases: the early post-war years (1945-69); the foundation years (1970-84); and the developing years (1985present).
