ABSTRACT

At the turn of the millennium, a change took place in relations between the Church of Sweden and the state. Thus, an issue that had been on the political agenda for almost 50 years had reached its solution. For a long time there had been talk of a ‘separation between the church and the state’, but when the point of decision was reached, the outcome instead was a ‘change of relations between the church and the state’. This contribution describes primarily the drawn-out process which finally led to a change of status for the Church of Sweden in relation to the state. However, in order to make the description meaningful, it is necessary to start considerably earlier.1
