ABSTRACT
A stalwart of Bolton Wanderers in the 1930s, Jack Atkinson was ‘a giant of a centre half around whom the entire defence would mould itself ’.1 His ‘no nonsense’ style of play enabled many of the more skilful players around him to demonstrate their art, knowing that any undue foul play would be quickly dealt with by ‘Big Jack’.
