ABSTRACT

BY FAR the most important review of research and researchers intoterrorism to date has been that carried out by Alex Schmid and Albert Jongman.1 The 1988 edition of their book, Political Terrorism: A New Guide to Actors, Authors, Concepts, Data bases, Theories and Literature, remains a key text for both new and established researchers alike. However, this unique source book is now over 15 years old and a great deal has happened in the intervening period. Yet there has been no systematic assessment of the research effort undertaken in the past decade. What then is the current state of research on terrorism?
