ABSTRACT
In early November 1944 in a speech to Moscow Party and Soviet officials Stalin catalogued the victories that the Red Army had scored over the Wehrmacht and her allies since the beginning of the year:

The decisive successes achieved by the Red Army during the past year and the expulsion of the Germans from the boundaries of our Soviet territory were brought about by a series of crushing blows inflicted by our troops upon the German troops, begun as far back as last January and subsequently developed throughout the course of the year under review.
