ABSTRACT

The collapsing World Trade Center towers and the smoke rising from the Pentagon triggered in many observers an uneasy sense that ‘everything had changed’ — that the path of global politics was turning swiftly and sharply in a new direction. Fuelling disquiet was uncertainty about where this road would lead and what stops would be encountered along the way. The passage of time has allowed for considered judgements — some still preliminary, some more definitive — about the effects of 11 September. Asked to address the impact on peace operations, the authors of this book offer conclusions that apply to specific national and institutional actors and to the conduct of operations themselves.
