Geographically, the Northern Tier of the Middle East comprised three countries – Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan. The Anatolian and Iranian plateaus were ‘separated from the valleys and plains of the Fertile Crescent by the majestic Taurus-Zagros mountain system’.2
