ABSTRACT
As mentioned in the introductory chapter, two concepts used to frame the analysis in this study are ‘small state’ and ‘influence’. The emergence of small states has long been a phenomenon in the international system.1 For example, the European states of Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark, Switzerland and former Czechoslovakia have often been cited as examples of small states.
