ABSTRACT

Of primary importance to our understanding of music is the organization of pitches and/or pitch-classes into patternistic melodic and harmonic groupings. In this text, we will refer to all such groupings, whether presented as chords or melodies, as sets. Ordered sets are enclosed in angled brackets (< >) and contain either pitches or pcs arranged in a particular sequential progression. Unordered sets list either the total pitch or total pc content of a collection and are enclosed in square brackets ( [ ] ). The order of elements in unordered sets may change depending on the analytical context.
