ABSTRACT
The triumph of German arms in the Franco-Prussian War led to the creation of a unified German state under strong Prussian influence. The power vacuum in Central Europe, once uneasily shared and contested by the weaker Austria and Prussia, was now filled by a young and robust state. By joining the ranks of the great powers, Germany took on new roles and new responsibilities around the worldÐpolitical, diplomatic, economic and cultural.
