ABSTRACT

The West Indies won the first two Cricket World (Prudential) Cups in 1975 and 1979. They were the only team to reach the finals in the first three of these competitions and their defeat by India in 1983 was a source of great astonishment throughout the cricketing world. From 1980 to 1995 they dominated all forms of cricket and were the acknowledged champions of the longer version of the game. Now, however, they are mired in a protracted slump that has seen them embarrassed, both in Test matches and one-day internationals, in several quarters of the globe.
