ABSTRACT

Whilst being the smallest of the Army Group-controlled areas in terms of maximum size, the territory under the administrative control of Army Group North occupied in excess of 81,000 sq km even after the Soviet winter offensive of 1941/2.7 In terms of pre-war Soviet administrative divisions, Army Group North occupied the bulk of Leningradskaia oblast’, and the western half of Kalininskaia oblast’, which had, prior to administrative reforms of 1937, been known as Velikolukskii okrug.
