ABSTRACT

Heinrich Heine, Lyrisches Intermezzo (1823), No 39 Tim Slack had begun his first two years at the head of Wilton Park as only ‘Interim Warden’. The reason was that the institution’s future had still hung in the balance. At the time of Slack’s appointment, on June 30, 1977, the lease of Wiston House had only nine months more to run: it was due to expire on March 25, 1978. Would the Foreign and Commonwealth Office renew it? On what terms? And with what expectations?
