Bloods, blues and barbarians: some aspects of late Victorian Oxbridge

Such activities were unquestionably unremarkable 100 years earlier at many ‘Oxbridge’ colleges, except for two things: they certainly did not include women,4 who were not yet admitted to exclusively men’s colleges; and they included the ‘hearties’ who populated many of the colleges. It was the time of bloods, blues and barbarians.
