ABSTRACT

This chapter explains about China from a geopolitical perspective. It shows that China is in the process of making the rest of the twenty-first century, in a geopolitical sense. The chapter provides a geographical description of China and an assessment of geopolitical theories that have been formulated with respect to China in particular the geopolitical ideas of Mackinder and Mahan. It examines the way that geopolitical ideas have endured and the theories developed in one context live in another. The chapter analyses the extent to which China is creating a new geopolitical reality and the strategic consequences of this development. It explains an analysis of the geopolitical efficacy of the Pacific Pivot. Understanding China's geopolitics will focus on three key variables: lines of communication, sources and configuration of energy supplies, and the development centres of economic wealth and what cumulative effect they could and are having on China's diplomatic relations.
