ABSTRACT

Before he departed from Buenos Aires, and before he received this final Argentine missive, Haig sent a message to Mrs Thatcher reporting that he had had ‘lengthy and intensive’ discussions and intended to arrive in London at 0630 on 12 April. He wanted to talk about ‘a draft proposal and some additional ideas’ that had come out of twelve hours of meeting with the Argentine leaders. Though serious problems remained some progress had been made. ‘In the meantime,’ he added, ‘I am sure you would agree that any military confrontation must be avoided at all costs until you have been able to consider this draft proposal.’
