ABSTRACT
Through extraformulaic embellishment, singers had considerable freedom to be innovative within the formulaic structure of the blues. The singers’ choices, however, extended beyond the internal structure of the formula. In combining formulas to make lines, lines to make stanzas, and stanzas to make songs, singers were again confronted with both options and limitations.
