ABSTRACT

Budgetary decisions taken in August 1987 by the sixth government of Martens, which subsequently resigned, envisaged a number of privatisations valued at 7 billion Belgian francs. This privatisation programme was placed on the political agenda as the result of pressure from the Parti Liberal Flamand (PVV) during budget negotiations. Apart from fiscal reforms, the government’s programme also established the level of public debt for 1988 and the timing of its repayment.
