ABSTRACT
HMG wish and intend to maintain a predominant political (and for that matter commercial) position and predominant responsibility for defence in the Middle East. [At the same time, however,] HMG desire…that the United States should interest themselves in the Middle East. The question is how to reconcile these two objects. It is a matter of getting the mixture right.
