ABSTRACT

Bevin’s warning, like Churchill’s words, accurately expressed the aims of the Labour Government’s Foreign Secretary. Bevin, like Churchill, believed that without a British-American understanding, Britain should not-and could not-remain in Palestine. There were others, however, with power and influence in Britain who did not consider this understanding to be a prerequisite for their country’s authority there, and did their utmost to frustrate the Foreign Secretary’s policy, with success. They were wrong, however. Britain alone could not tackle the recrudescence of nationalism in the Middle East, especially as it was coupled with American determination not to let Britain follow its own course in Palestine. The result was the surrender of the Mandate.
