TheSupremeGod,thefirstuniqueprinciplefrom whichalltheothergodstooktheirorigin,wasIlu1 whosenamesignifies"thegod"pre-eminently. HeistheOneandtheGoodwhomtheNeoplatonicianphilosophersannouncedasthecommon sourceofeverythinginChaldeantheology;• andindeedthefirstprincipleismentionedas"the godOne" 3indocumentsofthelaterepoch,which tellus,•thephilosophiclanguagehavingbeen completelyformedinthesacerdotalschools,thatin thebeginningtheExistingBeing(AuvKinuv)was begottenoftheAbyss(Apsu),andtheprimordialsea (Tiamat)andwasworshippedunderthisnameby Nebuchadnezzar.5Butthisbelongstoaphilosophicaldevelopmentofquiterecentdate.6Inthe religionoftheclassicalagesofthebasinofthe Euphrates,theideaofIluwastoocomprehensive
