ABSTRACT

The list of lectures and lecturers given at the end of the Preface to Learning and Working includes, it will observed, ((many)) of the old promoters, besides Mr. Maurice himself … Among the names of those who had more recently come about us…in the drawing class, are those of Ruskin, who after always keeping aloof from the Christian Socialist movement whilst it was fighting its fight and receiving knocks and blows from all quarters, was to take up some of its ideas and illustrate them with a perfection of language which would seem in the eyes of the public to make them his own,—of Rossetti whom he had patronised as against the critics, and whose devotion to him at that time was that of an almost adoring disciple, and of Lowes Dickinson, Archie Campbell's friend, who had by this time been brought altogether to Christ through Mr. Maurice's teaching, and who was then, and has always since remained, one of my most valued and dearest friends.
