ABSTRACT
It is stated that it was originally the custom in Buhaya for a father, or his son or his brother, during a meeting with his friends, to offer a girl to one of them as a wife. The man who accepted threw himself on the ground and embraced the legs of the father as a sign of his gratitude. The girl’s consent was never asked and no brideprice was paid.
