ABSTRACT
Lanciani’s ‘noble hall’ is likely to have been part of the fort’s headquarters, although neither its nor the fort’s floor-plan is known. Had the excavators published an excavation report, we might know whether the hall was a separate building, a room (schola) in the headquarters building, or perhaps the headquarters’ cross-hall (basilica), the usual place for altars and statues in a Roman fort.
