ABSTRACT
The large historical questions do not go away, but they easily relapse into vacuity, question begging or, at least, lack of focus. There is little point in rummaging yet again among the fifty-seven causes of the Fall of the Western Roman Empire until we have well-defined questions and as explicit as possible a frame of reference.
