ABSTRACT

Clara was lucky. It had only been in 1878 that London University agreed to the admission of women to take degree courses. That was the year she left the NLCS. Simultaneously a new school was being opened in Leicester by Miss Buss’ friend. Miss Leicester came to the NLCS to ascertain whether she could recruit some new staff members amongst Miss Buss’ pupils. She took an immediate liking to Clara and in addition to offering her employment was keen that she should continue her studies as an external student at London University and study for her BA degree, which in those days was taken in two parts, the First and Second BA. Two masters from the nearby Wyggeston Boys’ School were prepared to give her lessons in Greek and applied mathematics and it was agreed that she should be able to manage Latin and English herself.
