ABSTRACT

The combat operations by the 1st Ukrainian Front’s forces associated with the forcing of the Vistula River and the enlargement of the captured bridgehead require a special investigation with respect to their duration, intensity, and operational significance. Only a brief survey of the course of combat along the Sandomierz and Dembitsa axes is presented here, inasmuch as these battles were a continuation of the successfully conducted L’vov– Peremyshl’ operation. This chapter provides a brief review of the forcing of the Vistula, the development of the offensive toward Dembitsa, and the restoration during the course of the operation of those railroad lines that had important operational significance for force operations.
