ABSTRACT

Brian Sawkin (A196) was born in 1902. His mother was the daughter of a relatively prosperous local businessman who also employed Brian’s father as a bookkeeper in the family business. The family was small; Brian had one younger brother, and the premature death of their father was a significant turning point in the education of both young boys. Brian eventually became a student teacher in Plumstead, London, in 1919 and followed that with a Teacher’s Certificate at Goldsmiths’ College where he specialised in maths.
