ABSTRACT

It may seem unusual to include a chapter entitled diagnosis in a book concerned with the slow learner. The diagnosis of any child’s difficulties, particularly the problems of the child who cannot read, the remedial or ESN child, should normally be left to the specialist remedial teacher. Ideally, there should be a group of trained specialists within each school who could relieve the class teacher of the responsibility for a detailed programme of work for such children. However, quite a few schools at present have no trained remedial staff. Many primary schools do not have the staffing ratios necessary to appoint a specialised teacher for slow learners. Some secondary schools may also have no remedial staff, perhaps because they fail to recognise the slow learner as a child requiring special attention and resources.
