ABSTRACT

In this blasé age when technological marvels are treated as everyday occurrences, the quality of sheer exuberant excitement tends to be dulled. It was not so in rural Africa where ‘miracles’ could and sometimes did still happen, and people could still become wildly excited at something essentially simple. Such an event occurred just at the beginning of my first rainy season in Africa. Two prospectors, injured by lightning at their bush camp, were lifted out by helicopter and, en route to hospital, landed briefly on our golf course at Mwinilunga. The Africans went wild with excitement. Every man, woman and child of the Boma township crowded around to see this wonderful machine with its dragonfly-like body, gleaming shiny Perspex dome and whirling propellers. It was a very touching scene.
