ABSTRACT

In the spirit of comparative study, this chapter attempts to examine the situations of Hong Kong and Singapore as two port cities (and later mega-cities) in the Asia-Pacific. For the historian, the value of comparative studies is related to the insights and new questions that can be brought to bear on existing data. Here, two societies are subjected to simultaneous study. The immediate question that seeks a response is: ‘What are the critical similarities and differences?’
