ABSTRACT

Once again I find myself staring at a blank sheet of paper on which I am now attempting to write my thoughts about the processes of adult literacy. That I have explored this subject again and again has not in any way diminished the enthusiasm that overwhelmed me when I first began addressing it. One can never be finished with an idea as vital as adult literacy. I can think and rethink about how adults become literate and still be struck by new issues to reflect upon, even though I may not always have new things to say. I do not reflect on the purely abstract concepts of literacy, those divorced from the practice that informs them. Rather, I think about literacy in terms of the practice in which I am involved.
