ABSTRACT
In March 1979, the management of American President Lines (APL) was completing a determination of the characteristics of new containerships to be built. Within several weeks, they would be concluding contracts with a shipyard for the construction of these ships. Although the main parameters of these fully cellular vessels had been set, a final analysis was being made to determine the exact power plant and the degree to which 45foot containers (8' wide and 9 1/2' high) would be used on the vessels.
