There are a number of common themes which run through this seemingly diverse collection of articles. Chief amongst these is that learning to communicate is not just a matter of learning to talk. Indeed, learning to communicate begins before spoken language is acquired and continues long after. It involves non-verbal as well as verbal aspects and demands sensitivity to social situations and a shared understanding of the world.
