The character of the Japanese people, and a history of East–West relations

This section is extracted from what became the Introduction to the second part of Titsingh’s Illustrations of Japan. He gave it the title of only ‘The character of the Japanese people’, which does not fit the contents, and so is altered here. It is both an analysis of the local character, as he saw it, and a brief history of European relations with Japan.
