ABSTRACT

This record was kept for Titsingh to send privately to Batavia, during his second stint in Japan. It parallels, in part, the official log, or Dagregister, that he kept for the VOC. In it, he outlines the extraordinary secret dealings he had with the Nagasaki governor, Kuze Tango-no-kami Hirotami, to augment trade, and to construct a shogunal fleet. The principal addressee is Willem Alting, governor general of the Dutch East Indies. The ‘confident’ Titsingh refers to is the young translator, Namura Naosaburo.
