ABSTRACT
The 1937 Japanese invasion of China brought about a dramatic change in Rewi Alley’s life. During the attack Shanghai was severely bombed, destroying many of the factories he was responsible for inspecting. After the attack, thousands of Shanghainese workers were left without any means of making a living. The Japanese had deliberately targeted industrial areas in an attempt to crush Chinese industry.
