ABSTRACT

When language development is mentioned within the boundaries of the case, the English language is the focus of attention. There are six distinct phases or cognitive steps2 identifiable as part of Helen’s structured approach to providing language experience for learners that effectively encompass the entire framework of her teaching. With a view to exposing the backbone of this structure, details of the first theme have been stripped to a minimum. In addition to the desire for clarity, this approach avoids unnecessary duplication as embellishments of the theme occur through investigation of the other two cultural foci: communication and balance.
