ABSTRACT

With the expectation that people will be living longer due to new technologies, improved health care and the assertiveness of consumers to make lifestyle changes, the likelihood of more people becoming disabled is almost assured. The request from the disabled is that they are accepted and respected as humans and afforded the same rights and dignity guaranteed to all others. Health professionals and advocates work to keep the larger society and significant resource systems apprised as to the needs of the disabled. They offer recommendations for their assistance with this tremendous task. No one expects that with all that is needed in terms of funding, facilities, resources, practitioners and skilled people, that there can be a change overnight, yet planned change efforts are important. The disabled and their families appreciate the passion and activism for the struggle. Their determination for empowerment and quality of life is evident and espoused by those assisting them. The vision and mission are clear and continue to aid in the successful acceptance and adjustment to disability.
