ABSTRACT

Intuitionists believe that human beings have an innate moral capacity analogous to, though not the same as, their intellectual capacity, which enables them to make moral value judgments and to assess them as being true or false. Just as we can understand that ‘2+2= 4’ so we can understand that ‘Love thy neighbour as thyself’ is a true moral judgment. Intuitionists hold that the basic moral truths are self-evident, like simple logical and mathematical truths, and that other moral truths can be demonstrated by argument from the basic premises.
