Primary relationships-the emergence of self Many of the contributions to this volume concentrate on the more cognitive aspects of self-awareness, albeit with increasing attention to experiential issues. However, there is little concern with affective aspects and those related phenomena that are not expressed through the verbal medium. In contrast, the first three chapters in this part deal predominantly with such issues and focus upon the experience of both infant and caretaker. These contributions, although based on prior analytic theory, depend heavily upon rich resources of clinical observation and empathic interpretation. Moreover, the findings which emerge via this route can be integrated with more controlled observation and the more traditional psychological orientations to be found in this volume.
