ABSTRACT

At the moment the teaching profession seems to be rising up in arms against the suggestion, emanating from an inspired leak from the James Committee, that the link between universities and colleges of education should be weakened, if not severed altogether. The colleges, it is rumoured, are to be relegated to a kind of secondary modern area of higher education and given an inferior type of degree. Better, it is argued, a real degree like the BEd for some than a kind of academic greenlabel stamp for all.
