ABSTRACT
For some years a confusing and many-sided discourse concerning ‘Asian values’ and human rights has been raging, both in Asia and elsewhere. As early as the mid-1980s, Deng Xiaoping began to assert that China, given its different cultural background and stage of economic development, had a different perspective from that of the Western world.1
