ABSTRACT

 1. Then the Bhagavat said to Vajrapāṇi, ‘Lord of the Secret Ones! Listen to how mantras are to be accomplished and what the result of their accomplishment is! ‘Letter should be joined to letter 1 , likewise ground becomes ground A . You should recite 100,000 times mentally, with restraint.’ ‘The [first] letter is bodhicitta, the second is said to be sound. [One] ground is your tutelary deity, which should be created in your body.’ ‘The second ground should be known as the perfect Buddha, the most excellent of men B . The mantrin should imagine him located in a pure moon disc' ‘He should carefully arrange the letters within that in sequence. Suppressed by the drawn-in syllables 2 , life and exertion will be purified.’ ‘Life is said to be “breath” 3 exertion 4 is “recollection”. After he has restrained both of them, he should do the preliminary service.’ ‘Then, well restrained, the mantrin should recite for one month. The preliminary practice of the mantras is entry from one ground to the other. This is called preliminary practice by all the renowned Buddhas.’ ‘After that he should offer (145a)just a few flowers, perfume and so on. So that he may become a Buddha he should also dedicate [to others] his bodhicitta. Thus, without fear, the mantrin should recite for a second month 5 .’ ‘Then at the time of the full moon that person should start the accomplishment. He should confidently draw a mandala. making all of it as a vajra palace, on a mountain top, or in a cow-pen, or else in river valleys, at cross-roads, or in a isolated room, or in a place of the Mothers, or a quiet place A 6 . He should stay there and protect himself, and then resolutely carry out the sādhana' ‘The following signs will arise there at midnight, or else at sunrise, which should be known by the intelligent one: Hum, or the sound of a drum, likewise earth-shaking, or else pleasant words are suitable if they sound out from the sky, then by these signs he should know the material will be transmuted as wished 7 .’ ‘The Buddhas, most excellent of men, describe this as its result. He who abides thus in the Mantra Method will certainly become a Buddha. Therefore in all respects you should always recollect the mantra; the powerful Buddhas in the past also taught that one should recollect that.’ B
