ABSTRACT

The Shughni, or Shughnani, ethnic group, ethnonym xuγˇnı¯, xuγˇnu˚nı¯, populates the mountain valleys of the West Pamir. Administratively, the Shughni-speaking area is part of the Mountainous Badakhshan Autonomous Region (Tajik Viloyati Mukhtori Kuhistoni Badakhshon) of the Republic of Tajikistan, with its major center of Khorog, Taj. Khorugh (37° 30′N, 71° 31′E), and of the adjacent Badakhshan Province of Afghanistan.
