ABSTRACT

Hizb Allāh (Ar.) The Party of God. This is the name borne by a major fundamentalist Shī'ite grouping, founded after the 1979 Iranian Revolution. The name finds its origins in the Qur'ān: both Sūrat al-Mā'ida (q.v.) (v.56) and Sūrat al-Mujādila (q.v.) (v.22) associate the believers with 'the party of God'. (See Amal; Fundamentalism, Islamic)
