ABSTRACT

Zāwiya (Ar.) [pl. zawāyā] Literally, 'a corner'. In the technical terminology of tasawwuf (q.v.) the zāwiya has been defined as a small khānagāh (q.v.). However, the zāwiya was usually attached to a specific tarīqa (q.v.). In North African usage the zāwiya implied a small sūfī (q.v.) teaching mosque established over a saint's tomb. (See Ribāt; Tekkē.)
