ABSTRACT

Since 1993 much has changed yet much is the same. The State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) has opened its door to foreign investments and invited tourists to Burma. However, the regime still expresses fear of foreign influence, Western culture in particular, and its military intelligence maintains a tight surveillance of contacts between Burmese and foreigners. Violence and repression have become integrated into daily life.
