ABSTRACT

Born in Kolhapur in 1842 into an orthodox Brahmin family, he showed a propensity for learning from an early age and entered the Elphinstone Institution, Bombay, in 1856 and later the University of Bombay where he graduated in law. He was nominated a Fellow of Elphinstone College in recognition of his intellectual distinction and taught history, literature and economics there from 1868. But it was in law that he made his career and in 1871 he was appointed magistrate and later acting judge in the Government courts at Poona. Prior to his death in 1901, he had attained the position of High Court Judge in Bombay.
